Letter From The Youth Pastor
Hello and welcome to CrossRoads! My name is Mitchell Lyons and I am the youth director for Turning Point Baptist Church.
We started CrossRoads on January 12, 2020 in the café of the church. Exactly seven months later, we finished turning the garage into our own room! A little about me: I am 27 years old and graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Journalism and Communications.
I got saved when I was about five and baptized a few years later. I spent the first 20 years of my life attending Graham Road Baptist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. At Graham Road, I participated in AWANA, youth group, church plays and the sports outreach teams. It was at that church where I learned so much about the Bible, memorized verses and began developing my relationship with Christ. When my pastor of 20 years left the church, I stayed for a few months and then started attending Turning Point when I was home from college.
Once I moved back from Athens, Ohio, I started attending Turning Point regularly. Late in 2018, Pastor Ron asked me to consider starting a youth group at church. After prayer, I agreed to do it. So, in 2019 we started a youth group on Wednesday nights. After a few months, and much prayer, we knew if we wanted the youth group to work we had to move it to Sunday Mornings. So, in January CrossRoads was born. When you don’t see me at church, you can usually find me playing with some of our eight beagles or at the softball fields!
Why the name CrossRoads?
We chose the name CrossRoads because we thought it fit the lives of teenagers today. They are at a CrossRoads in their life. Are they going to go to church and develop a relationship with God or no? Are they going to engage in sinful activities like drugs, alcohol, premarital sex or will they remain faithful to God's biblical code of conduct? They are making decisions about their future, such as are they going to go to college, trade school, or find a job? Teenagers have so many decisions to make that affect the rest of their life. They are at a CrossRoads in a lot of different ways.
Our mission is to provide sound Biblical teaching and personal application, and to encourage a deep personal relationship with Jesus. We desire for the teens to know what they believe and why, to develop a connection with Christ that will last far beyond their teen years. Thank you so much for visiting our website and the CrossRoads page. I hope you prayerfully consider coming to Turning Point Baptist Church. We would love to have you!
